Learn more about some of the best 21st-century architecture from the people who made it happen. We’ve paired leading architects and academics for themed lectures where they will present their work, before sitting down to discuss their individual approaches to similar projects. The UK's largest cultural project in generations, this new neighbourhood at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will bring some of the world's leading cultural and educational institutions into East London. It brings together new venues for the London College of Fashion, the Victoria & Albert Museum, BBC Music and Sadler's Wells, as well as 600 new homes, retail and community spaces. Bob Allies (Allies and Morrison) will present new buildings for London College of Fashion and BBC Music. While Eimear Hanratty (O'Donnell + Tuomey Architects) will talk about the designs of V&A East and Sadler’s Wells Dance Theatre. This will be followed by a conservation on the joys and pitfalls of working on such prestigious projects. The event will be chaired by Sandy Rattray, a governor of the Southbank Centre and the C20 chair. Bob Allies is the co-founder of Allies and Morrison. Bob has shaped many significant masterplans, from King’s Cross to London’s Olympic Legacy. He’s Professor of Architecture at the University of Bath and has recently been appointed to the role of Architect in Residence to the city of Bath and North-East Somerset. In 2016, he was awarded an OBE for services to architecture. Eimear Hanratty is Associate Director at O'Donnell + Tuomey Architects. Eimear studied architecture in Dublin, Oslo and Beijing. She set up O+T’s office in London and has a keen interest in conservation and has worked on the extension and refurbishment of a Grade II Listed Lutyens building in London as well as a Grade I listed Nash building on the Mall, next to Buckingham Palace. The series coincides with the new C20 book 100 21st Century Buildings (2026, Batsfords). To book an online ticket for this lecture, click here. Buy the whole lecture series and save. The ticket price includes a glass of wine and a contribution to our casework and campaigns. Note: This event is hybrid and is being run both in-person at Cowcross Street Gallery and online via Zoom. The event will be recorded and offered as a catch-up lecture for those who have booked and will be available for two weeks.

Around the fringe of every city lies an Edgeland. Neither town or country these fertile hinterlands are made up of two different natures. Skirting the ancient borders of the City of London, this TWO PART walk explores the liminal buildings, streets and spaces that have grown up in the shadow of the financial heart. Following a route defined first by the Romans two millennia ago, it looks at the ‘City Fringe’ between Finsbury Square, Smithfield and Holborn Bars to reveal modernist utopias, medieval sanctuaries, partial monasteries and markets! PART ONE - Saturday 17 October A walk by The London Ambler - Mike Althorpe

21st Century Architecture: HOUSING with Phil Hamilton (Peter Barber Architects) and David Mikhail (Mikhail Riches) Learn more about some of the best 21st-century architecture from the people who made it happen. We’ve paired leading architects and academics for themed lectures where they will present their work, before sitting down to discuss their individual approaches to similar projects. Britain might have notoriously low quality of new built homes, but there are architects and enlightened clients committed to improving the standards and with that people’s lives. We’ll hear from two of them. David Mikhail of Mikhail Riches will present the Stirling Prize-winning Goldsmith Street scheme they designed with Cathy Hawley. In 2019 it became the only social-housing scheme ever to win the coveted annual award, given to the UK's best new building. The 105 low-energy council homes were delivered for Norwich City Council. Phil Hamilton of Peter Barber Architects will present Donnybrook Quarters in Tower Hamlets and Edgewood Mews in Barnet – two highlights from their award-winning portfolio of radical and innovative housing developments the practice delivered for housing associations, councils and charities. The event is chaired by Laura Mark – architecture critic, former Architect's Journal editor and current Head of Casework at C20. David Mikhail is one of founders of Mikhail Riches and has been responsible for Goldsmith Street for Norwich City Council, The Housing Delivery Programme for City of York Council and Owlstone Croft Graduate Homes for Queens’ College Cambridge. David also developed a slice of unpromising land at Church Walk Hackney, which went on to become the RIBA London Building of the Year 2013. Phil Hamilton is a Director at Peter Barber Architects, which he joined in 2002, having worked with Nigel Coates previously. Phil has a wealth of planning and construction experience having led large multi discipline teams on multiple award-winning housing and mixed use projects. He is a member of the Hackney and Wandsworth Design Review Panels, and is a member of the RIBA National Awards Panel.
