@ Join us for an evening with celebrated psychogeographer, writer and filmmaker John Rogers to help celebrate his dazzling new book CONFESSIONS OF A LONDON RIVER HUNTER, published by our great friends over at Three Imposters. London is a city of rivers: there are said to be over 350 rivers and streams in Greater London. Most have slipped from the consciousness of the city yet they trickle on through parks and open spaces, behind houses and under roads, winding their stories through the fabric of London and whispering their legends. From the western marshes of the Yeading Brook to the lost river of Leytonstone, the channels of the moon goddess, a haunted stream, long buried City tributaries and a brook rescued from the thickets, John Rogers walked some of London’s most storied watercourses that rarely get acknowledged, and attempts to find a way to hear their tales. John Rogers has spent more than two decades walking and documenting the overlooked landscapes of London both in text and video. He is the author of This Other London: Adventures in the Overlooked City; Welcome to New London: Journeys and Encounters in the Post-Olympic City; and The Black Path. His films include London Overground, made with Iain Sinclair, The London Perambulator, and Make Your Own Damn Art: The World of Bob and Roberta Smith. John was Psychogeographer-in-Residence for Waltham Forest London Borough of Culture 2019 and frequently speaks in public on the subject of London and walking. He lives in East London and continues to explore the city and its hinterland on foot. As always, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. The International Booker Prize-winning author of Time Shelter joins Lea Ypi to explore memory, imagination and the elastic possibilities of fiction. What if you could invent an entire life with a stranger in an airport café? Or see the past through one eye and the future through the other, while remaining unable to glimpse the present? These are among the unsettling premises in The Man with Many Names, the new collection of short stories by Georgi Gospodinov, one of Europe’s most inventive and celebrated contemporary writers. Moving from the Balkans to the moon and beyond, Gospodinov’s stories find the extraordinary in apparently ordinary lives. A fleeting encounter can become an imagined lifetime; a casual gesture can alter someone else’s fate. Funny, melancholy and gloriously unpredictable, these are stories that ask us to reconsider how we experience time, how we remember, and how much of any life remains unknowable to others. Gospodinov came to international prominence with Time Shelter, which won the 2023 International Booker Prize, and has since established himself as one of the essential literary voices of post-communist Europe. His new collection, translated by his longtime collaborator Angela Rodel, brings some of his finest short fiction into English for the first time.

Virtue and Rosalind
Anne Serre, author of the Booker-shortlisted A Leopard-Skin Hat, returns to the bookshop with her new novel Virtue and Rosalind (translated by Mark Hutchinson) – a deeply strange exploration of art, literature and relationships between women. Merve Emre has praised the ‘rippling unreality’ of Serre’s prose: ‘reading her’, she writes, ‘is like watching a mirage flicker in and out of focus’. Serre will be in conversation with writer and critic Alice Blackhurst.

‘Imagine you could hold a baby hare and bottle-feed it. Imagine that it lived under your roof and lolloped around your bedroom at night, drumming on the duvet cover when it wanted your attention. Imagine that, over two years later, it still ran in from the fields when you called it and snoozed in your house for hours on end.’ – Chloe Dalton
