@ Housmans, with Tribune and Verso, are happy to present a pandel discussion feeaturing Oliver Eagleton, Amelia Horgan and Ben Burgis. Housmans and Verso are happy to present a panel discussion to help celebrate the publication The Blueprint: How Socialism Can Work in the Real World by Ben Burgis, Bhaskar Sunkara and Mike Beggs. The panel takes up the books the books central premise: exactly how can socialism work in the real world? What constitutes ‘real’ here? What does it mean for ‘socialism’ to ‘work’ exactly, and whom does it work for? We can be sure all these questions and more will be answered. On our panel we have: Ben Burgis, one of the books authors and a Jacobin columnist. He is also an adjunct philosophy professor at Rutgers University, and the host of the YouTube show and podcast Give Them An Argument. He’s the author of several books, most recently Christopher Hitchens: What He Got Right, How He Went Wrong, and Why He Still Matters. Oliver Eagleton, the editor of Tribune magazine and author of The Starmer Project (2022) and the forthcoming The Future Regained (2027). Amelia Horgan, the author of Lost in Work (2021) and Principal Editor at the Common Wealth think tank. Her work has appeared in Tribune, Jacobin, The Guardian and other places. On The Blue Print: Neither capitalism nor central planning, this is the future for socialism. Capitalism isn’t working. But is there a plausible alternative? The Blueprint lays one out: a system where workers control every lever of production, and competitive markets and state planning coexist side by side. Drawing on the history of socialist experiments and the economic debate over planning and markets, The Blueprint confronts the hardest questions about what went wrong in the past—and why it can go right in the future. The result is a socialism worthy of the twenty-first century. ‘It is rare indeed to find a book that so keenly matches the elegance of its arguments with the passion of its politics. Here we have an alternative economic blueprint for our time, a shining antidote to the crude bestiality of a fading and failing Trumpian regime. The aim is to build a socialism of and for the people, a socialism that meets all our reasonable wants needs and desires with the minimum of effort. We can, the authors claim, for the first time in our history, “combine egalitarianism in distribution and democracy in production with the abundance of high-tech modernity.” This is a book to “pry open our imaginations and put the biggest questions of politics back on the table.” Let the counterattack to all that is obnoxious in our present circumstances begin.’ David Harvey, author of The Story of Capital As always, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. Thursday 5 Nov 6:30-9pm Join us for the UK launch of The Hill by Harriet Clark. The author will be in conversation with Adam Phillips. About The Hill: Suzanna Klein was a baby when her mother got up early one morning to rob a bank with a group of fellow radicals. Now, every Saturday, Suzanna lines up at the prison gates among the other children, each dressed as if for celebration. Inside there is a nursery and a cemetery; there are watchful guards and distractable nuns; there are women counting down to release and women like Suzanna's mother, who will never be released. At home, Suzanna is raised by her grandmother, who is entirely unforgiving of her daughter's crime and refuses to visit the prison. Surrounding Suzanna are her grandmother's friends, who know one another from their years in the Communist Party and still spend extended cocktail hours debating the Hitler-Stalin pact. Though these women once insisted on changing the world, they are torn between teaching Suzanna how the world works and shielding her from it. Suzanna vows to return to the prison forever but her mother wants her to be free. Harriet Clark's The Hill is an incandescent novel of a child growing up between worlds, the last of three generations whose fates have been tied to punishment. It is the tale of a family broken apart by the desire for change, told with irreverent wisdom and visionary force.

@ What if a book wasn’t an endpoint but an infrastructure? Please join us for the launch of Publishing as Collective Infrastructure. This title is less a ‘book’ than it is a radical rethinking of the book-form itself; formulated as a collectively authored, polyphonic work; an intervention into the realms of academic and open-access publishing. The project is grounded in experimentation and the bridging of theory and practice. It works to challenge proprietary software and big-tech dependency, orientating itself towards a future mode of publishing that must address the direct crises of precarity and education. Publishing as Collective Infrastructure challenges the idea of the book as a fixed object and reimagines publishing as a collective, political, and infrastructural practice. Emerging from the ServPub project, this book brings together artists, academics, technologists, feminist server collectives, and experimental publishers to expose how contemporary publishing is shaped by extractive platforms, proprietary software, unpaid labour, and opaque infrastructures. Against this backdrop, the authors develop and document alternative models grounded in free and open-source tools, collective authorship, feminist care practices, and self-hosted, small-scale infrastructures. Blending theory, documentation, and reflection, the book explores publishing as a full-stack practice: spanning writing, design, software, servers, logistics, and governance. It addresses topics including ambulant servers, wiki-to-print workflows, versioning and forking books, radical referencing, and autonomous publishing, while situating these practices within broader debates on infrastructure, open access, and knowledge politics. Rather than offering a blueprint, Publishing as Collective Infrastructure functions as a living experiment and pedagogical resource. It invites readers to think with – and work through – the infrastructures that make publishing possible, and to imagine how knowledge might be produced and shared otherwise. Bio: Publishing as Collective Infrastructure does not have a single, unified author. Instead, it is a polyphonic work shaped by the shared labor, ideas, and practices of multiple collectives and projects working across experimental publishing, feminist infrastructure, open-source design, and autonomous knowledge production. The book emerges from collaborations involving In-grid, Minor Compositions, noNames, Shape, and Systerserver, with contributions from Constant, Creative Crowds, Hackers & Designers, OBF Experimental Publishing Group, TITiPI, & Varia. Together, these groups contribute situated perspectives, technical practices, and collective forms of authorship that reflect the book’s commitment to publishing as a social, infrastructural, and political process. As always, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. If you are unable to pay for a ticket please do not hesitate to contact us at shop@housmans.com, and a free ticket will be made available. If you choose ‘book + entry’ your copies of the book will be available to collect on the evening. If you would like to collect it earlier, or arrange for delivery, please contact us (postage is £2.95). Telephone 020 7837 4473 or email shop@housmans.com. Doors Open at 6:45pm, Event Starts 7:00.
