Crossing the Wine Dark Sea
How do we give old words new voices? What must a translator lose – and what might she gain – when she moves between languages, bringing ancient stories to modern life? Emily Wilson’s explorations and expressions of the translator’s art have become a topic of viral discourse, thanks to her review of Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey in the London Review of Books – an adaptation that took significant inspiration from her 2017 translation, the first by a woman. But Wilson has spent a lifetime wrestling with these questions in both Homeric and more contemporary contexts. Much of this work is gathered in Crossing the Wine-Dark Sea, her new essay collection published by Profile Books in partnership with the LRB, which shifts from depictions of Helen of Troy to Cardi B and Athenian comedy, via Han Kang’s novels and Rome’s love of Greek culture. Joining Emily to discuss the promise, possibility and constant renewal of classical literature and how it relates to other kinds of literary translation is Polly Barton, a translator of Japanese to English, founder of the Translated By, Bristol festival, and author of Fifty Sounds and Porn: An Oral History, whose first novel, What am I, a deer?, has just been shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize.

At the heart of the evening is a simple but hard-won idea: that it is the small things, the ordinary moments most of us let pass unnoticed, that turn out to carry the most weight.

Speaker: Lady Hale, former president of the Supreme Court Our laws and justice system might touch our lives when we have an accident, a wrong is done to us, or we have a family difficulty. They are vast, ancient and cover everything from the personal to the regulation of our government. But to most of us, they are a web of intimidating institutions and practices. Lady Hale shows us how the law is on our side. Taking us into the complexities of real courts and real decisions, we see that we all have rights: schoolchildren, disabled people, workers, minorities and patients. She draws on true stories from every part of the justice system, from lowly benefits tribunals and magistrates’ courts to the lofty heights of the Royal Courts of Justice and the Old Bailey; stories about the dilemmas of deciding what is right and just. We see first-hand how the people whose needs the law is designed to protect actually experience it. Baroness Hale of Richmond, is a British judge who served as President of the Supreme Court of the UK from 2017 until her retirement in 2020.She was the third person and first woman to serve in the role. In 2004, she joined the House of Lords as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and is the only woman to have been appointed to that position. She served as a Law Lord until 2009 when she, along with the other Law Lords, transferred to the new Supreme Court. Since retiring from the bench in 2020, she has held a number of academic appointments, including an honorary professorship at University College London. She is Visitor to Girton College, Cambridge, her alma mater, and holds a number of honorary degrees. She has published numerous articles and several Law books, and more recently for the general reader, ‘Spider Woman: A Life’, ‘With the Law on Our Side’, and with Rowan Williams, ‘Do We Have the Right to Die?’. Members: Free, Online or Victoria Hall Non-Members: £10, Online or Victoria Hall.
