Speaker: Judith Mackrell, author and dance critic Judith Mackrell’s double biography of siblings, Augustus and Gwen John, provides a portrait of two prodigiously talented artists, whose experiments with form and colour created some of the most memorable works of the early twentieth century. This lecture will reveal how the two Johns were in many ways polar opposites, but in others were remarkably alike. Augustus – vivid, volatile and promiscuous, a hero among romantics and bohemians – was celebrated as one of the great British talents of his generation. As a woman, Gwen’s place in the art world was much smaller and her private way of working and reserved nature meant it was only long after her death that her tremendous gifts were fully acknowledged. Gwen’s temperament, however, was as turbulent as her brother’s. Judith Mackrell was dance critic for The Guardian for many years and co-authored The Oxford Dictionary of Dance. She is the author of several non-fiction titles and her biography of the Russian ballerina Lydia Lopokova, Bloomsbury Ballerina, was shortlisted for the Costa Biography Award. Members: Free, Online or Victoria Hall Non-Members: £10, Online or Victoria Hall. To attend in person, please pay on the door Please book, for online link only, by 1pm on the day of the event Please join us for a drink in the Members’ Room after the lecture

Historical memory, and the work with historical witnesses and testimonies, has been one of the central themes of Memorial’s work throughout its existence. Memorial, an international human rights organisation and historical society, continues this work today – now in exile. In contemporary Russia, the issue is no longer simply one of suppressing, forgetting, or ignoring the past. Whereas only a few years ago it was still possible to speak primarily of nostalgia for the Soviet past, today we are witnessing the active construction and dissemination of new myths about the Soviet era, including around the figure of Stalin.

Alice Slater’s bestselling debut novel, Death of a Bookseller, takes us inside a struggling bookshop on Walthamstow High Street, where bookseller and true crime obsessive Roach becomes increasingly fixated on her new colleague, Laura. Darkly funny, unsettling and horribly compelling, the novel examines our appetite for stories of murder, the ethics of true crime, and the dangerous distance between fascination and obsession. In The Killer Who Lived Here, investigative journalist Matt Blake tells the extraordinary true story of buying a house in Walthamstow as a new home for himself and his young daughter, only to discover that it had once belonged to the man dubbed the E17 Night Stalker. As unsettling things begin to happen inside the house, Matt finds himself drawn deeper into its history, questioning whether a place can retain the memory of what happened there and how a rational sceptic makes sense of the seemingly inexplicable. One book is a pitch black work of fiction, the other a deeply personal true story, but both find darkness hiding behind the ordinary doors of Walthamstow. Alice and Matt will discuss the strange pull of true crime, the responsibilities involved in telling stories connected to real violence, the point at which curiosity becomes obsession, and how Walthamstow itself became such an important presence in their writing. Expect an atmospheric and thought provoking evening about murder, memory, storytelling and the unsettling histories that may be much closer to home than we realise.

Join us for the launch of Ray Filar's debut novel Choke. About the book: A dyke hooker revenge fantasy novella, in which two sex workers fall in love and go on a ruthless murder spree. When Leila meets Silvia during a booking with Silvia's longtime client, the infatuation is instant. Silvia is older, glamorous, charming, and has been working for a lot longer than Leila, who is still new to sex work. Later that evening the two run into each other at a hotel bar, and after a messy night of drugs and sex, begin a romantic relationship that takes a turn when they start murdering clients together. Traversing the spaces of queer East London and the corporate city, Choke is a propulsive and sexy revenge fantasy mash up of black comedy, psychological (un)realism and literary essay that bends tropes and explores the essence of fantasy, from BDSM and kink to wealth and class to bodies and transness. A wild, fun, smart, and pulpy novella that transforms literary traditions and elevates queer writing.
